The Brazilian Blowdry

The Original 12 Week Blowdry is a product and application that is unlike any other chemical relaxer or straightening treatment currently on the market. This product does not daage your hair, in fact it does the complete opposite!
The product contains a mild chemical solution enriched with Keratin. Once applied the chemical sits on the cuticle not penetrating into the cortex which allows the Keratin to work at its best. The treatment then begins to condition, moisturise and reconstruct your hair, leaving you with shiny, soft and more manageable hair.

The application takes approximately one to two hours depending on hair type and can last up to three months. Each additional time you have the treatemnt it will last longer, another great point is that there os no re-growth to deal with as it gently washes out over time.

This system is designed to eliminate frizz, tame unruly curls and smooth out the waves without making it too flat unlike other straightening treatments. Although the application is similar to the other straightening services where they use the straightening irons to seal the product into the hair cuticle, this solutions is not as strong and is designed to condition the root to tip. What sets this system apart from therest is that this product has been designed for coloured or processed hair including bleached hair! In fact the worse the condition, the better the result.

With streamlined dresses and mainly smooth tresses, Lady GaGa stole the show with her white Ice Queen impression. Not one to shy away from standing out from the crowd, Lady opted for a snow white wig and looked like she had been attacked by barnacles.

However, Margherita Missoni stole the show with her beautiful 1920s-inspired updo - one of my favourite looks - dressed with a simple headband decorated with brooches. A head-turning style that is perfect for bad hair days and hiding hideous roots. Her bright red lips brought her look bang up-to-date.

Supermodel Kristen McMenamy has been making headlines this week, simply by daring to bare her natural grey hair on the catwalk.
The 45-year-old American model decided to stop colouring her naturally silver hair six years ago, stating: "'You can get older and still be rock 'n' roll. I thought all that grey hair would make a beautiful picture."
And it sounds like she's not the only one who thinks that - going grey has certainly not prevented Kristen landing high profile work. The model has appeared in Vogue and Dazed and Confused this month, as well as walking for Calvin Klein last season during New York Fashion Week.
Perhaps Kristen's silvery locks were also partly responsible for the shades of grey we've seen on superstar blogger Tavi, fashion fan Pixie Geldof, and even Lady Gaga!

Make a list of things you like best about yourself- everything from a sense of humour to your great legs of the fact that you’re good with animals or kind to old ladies. Be honest, and generous- it’s really important that you should recognize your good points.

Now write down everything you like about your hair and everything nice anyone has every said about it.
Now list what you don’t like about it, i.e. the colour, the way it frizzes up when you’re exercising, or that you need to wash it every day and hate the tyranny of it.

Think of the last time you were happy with your hair and try to remember why, was it its length, colour, or its shape? Was it also that you were on holiday, or in love, or healthy and felt fit? Was it the shampoo you were using? Think of all the factors that contribute to feeling good about your hair as well as about yourself.

Collect pictures of styles you like, these will give your hairdresser an idea of what you’re after, and he’ll soon be able to tell you whether that style is right for your hair.

Be realistic. The style that will give you confidence is the one that suits your hair type. If you have fine flyaway hair its best not to go for a pre-Raphaelite look. And a style that suits your hair will be one that you can manage too.

Be patient, you might not get the style of your dreams first or second time round. Both you and your hairdresser have to work with your hair- its length may not be quite right at first, or you might want to change the colour.

Some of the hair’s greatest enemies are stress, worry and tension. Even the simplest thing, such as the way you sit of stand, can affect your hair’s health. If there’s too much tension around your neck and shoulders, if you hunch up over a desk or a computer screen, then the supply of blood to the areas and upwards is constricted. That means the oxygen and its accompanying nutrients aren’t getting around.

Worry or stress can precipitate anything from bingeing to dandruff. It can make our eyes dull, our skin dry, our hair lank and our bodies listless. Its one of the bêtes noires of this century. We live at a rush, work at top speed, take on too many responsibilities, try to pack too much into a day or a week and make unrealistic demands on ourselves, our partners and occasionally our children. When we get to bed we’re to exhausted to sleep. We’ve forgotten the art of relaxation and consequently our systems suffer. A side effect of stress is hair loss, and I don’t mean the hundred or so hairs we naturally lose each day. If stress gets too much for us then hair can come out in handfuls. If its got to that stage its vital to go to your doctor and if possible a trichologist . But before stress reaches such a peak, teach yourself some relaxation techniques or simply make time in your day for yourself.

Here’s how not to let your hair and your headdress be a source of anxiety before the day.

· Once you’ve chosen your dress a headdress, let your hairdresser into the secret. It’s our job to help you look your best and we need the full picture.

· Have several appointments before the big day so that you can try out a few different ways of styling your hair and wearing you headdress. Make you appointments for the end of your working day or a work-free day – you don’t want to have to go back to work looking as if you’re off to a party. That way you’ll also have a few hours of getting used to the style and seeing how stable it is.

· Tiaras are popular again, and even the lightest ones need careful anchoring with pins, plaits and hairpieces. During your practice sessions, give your hair a vigorous shaking to make sure the tiara stays put. A lot is demanding of a bride. For a start, everyone will want to kiss you and someone’s hat is going to come into contact with your piece of hair engineering. Small bridesmaids occasionally need encouragement and you’ll find yourself bending down to do so – it makes a great picture so long as your tiara’s not sliding off. And there’s no knowing what stray bits of a tree, a car, a pew or a table are going to lock on to your veil and give it a good tug.

· If you want to change your hairstyle, make sure you have discussed every aspect of it with your hairdresser beforehand. If you want to change your colour, do it a little in advance. This gives you time to get used to it and make and necessary adjustments.

· If you want a light perm for extra body have that done in advance to – say two to three weeks beforehand, but not at the same time as having colour done.

· Have at least one practice run for your make-up. Involve your hairdresser so that he can make adjustments to your hair if need be – it will only be something like tweaking a fringe to give more emphasis to your eyes. It all helps to make you feel great on your wedding day.

· Try not to look worried every time you try on your headdress. Smile and you’ll look better and feel massively more confident.

· If you are wearing a hat, give your hairdresser a chance to see it and work with it before the wedding – not on the day!

· Finally, if your hairdresser comes to your house to do your hair on the day of the wedding, do let him/her know in advance if you want him to do a quick style on your mum or grandma so that he allows himself time or brings somebody else along.

We have been through so many fads and fashions about what was constitutes a healthy diet that it’s hardly surprising that we sometimes get confused. And there have been many times over the last twenty or so years when experts have got it wrong, or new research has caused them to change their minds. Then there are the commercial concerns of the vast food manufacturing business. We’ve had the high-fibre fashion, we’ve lived through the high-cholesterol scares, abandoned fats of every type, forsworn sugars, eggs and red-meats, dispensed with caffeine and sodium, been terrified by BSE scares and are still working are way through the minefields of overproduction and factory farming. There have been times in the past few years when all we felt we could eat were a handful of leaves and a few nuts – and even those only if you weren’t allergic to them.

Somehow, in spite of all this knowledge, we’re told we’re the fattest and unhealthiest we’ve ever been as a nation. Running parallel with this are the growing numbers if young girls (and young men now too) with eating disorders. Some experts estimate that as many as 60 per cent of all teenage girls suffer, or will do at some time from such a disorder.

My view is that the only way you can get through all of this is to fall back on the age-old rule of thumb that a little of what you fancy does you good. If you can have a reasonably balanced diet and take some form of exercise on a regular basis then at least you’re in with a chance.

A well balanced diet of some protein – meat or fish or cheese – some carbohydrates – potatoes or pasta or rice – and large helpings of fruit and vegetables is mostly what we need. Far too few people eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables, but listening to both my clients and staff I know that many of us are trying to rectify this. I know from the nutritionists and doctors I’ve worked with that we’re also much more likely now to search out organically produced fruit and vegetables. We’ve listened to the warnings, read the signs and decided that we’ve had enough of pesticide-ridden foods. Those of us with children are made constantly aware of what we are doing, first to our own bodies and then to our countryside and environment, by not taking action on any or all of these fronts. Many of us have little green monsters in our midst watching our every mouthful and asking questions that could nearly put you off your breakfast!

Foods hair loves,
· Fresh fruits, particularly red and orange ones such as oranges, uglis, clementines, tangerines, grapefruits, pineapples, mangoes, papaya, apricots, peaches and black grapes.
· Salad vegetables: lettuce, baby spinach, watercress, rocket, tomatoes, avocadoes cucumber and chicory.
· Vegetables: all the greens from cabbage to asparagus, plus red peppers, carrots, onions, cauliflower, courgettes, celery, leeks and broccoli.
· Wholegrains: brown rice, wholewheat pasta, wholemeal breads and porridge.

Foods hair likes,

· Proteins: chicken, small portions or red meat, fish, especially oily varieties such as salmon, sardines and herring and small helping of hard cheeses and eggs.
· Pulses such as beans and lentils.
· Unsaturated fats such as cold-pressed olive and safflower oils; small amounts of butter.

Foods hair would rather you avoid,

· Saturated fats, anything processed, biscuits, cakes, chocolate and sugar, crisps, salted nuts, salted anything, creams, burgers, frankfurters and anything deep-fried.

Drinks,

· Water: lots, at least a litre and a half a day.
· Herbal or fruit teas. If you cannot do without caffeine, limit your intake to one or two cups of coffee or tea a day.
· Watch the alcohol- one or two glasses of wine maximum (red is better for your blood than white) or one glass of beer a day.
· Fruit juices: one or two glasses a day. Vegetable juices are even better.
· Vegetable drinks such as carrot, celery, tomatoes or V8. Invest in a juicer and make your own-these are great for de-tox days.
· Avoid colas or other fizzy drinks.

Best for hair.
· Beta-carotene is converted by the body into vitamin A when required, and it works as an antioxidant, protecting the cells. It helps maintain healthy hair, skin and nails, among other things.
· Vitamin B complex
· Vitamin C
· Omega-3
· Starflower oil
· Selenium
· Zinc

With the war in Afganistan still raging, wartime styling came into the spotlight at the Abed Mahtouz AltaRoma fashion show in Rome. It's a look that has also been sported by Black Eye Peas Fergie and Lady Gaga recently so one to keep your eye on, as I suspect it will be in abundance at the spring/summer shows in a few months time. On another note, Abed Mahtouz' dresses seemed to defy grafity, creating cleavages without any visible support!

We was starting to get bored of the continuous supply of updos seen on the runways of fashion shows. It seems some designers don't want any hair to distract from their clothes, despite hair, clothes and make-up all needing to work together to create the ultimate look. The models at Nino Lettieri AltaRoma fashion show in Rome again wore updos, but this time they were given a simple twist. With pieces used they were twisted and knotted for a two-tone effect, definitely one of the key looks for next season.

The Dragons blasted Shaun's idea - Deborah Meaden described it as like a horse brush! - but he and his Tangle Teezer have gone on to be one of the biggest successes ever to be rejected by the Dragons.

Well, one of the most memorable aspects of the show was when Shaun asked Deborah about her experiences when she has her hair dyed and she hotly denied that she had her hair coloured.

Well, this week she was at the Wella Business Network and someone quizzed her about it. Deborah assured delgates that she was indeed a 100% natural blonde. "I hate people who lie and if there was something I was going to lie about it wouldn't be the colour of my hair!" she said.

she joked about how the subject had sparked a debate on forums at the time. She said that her hairdresser gets cross with her for not getting her hair cut regularly enough, so she was hardly going to risk colouring it!

Ever since Alexander Wang sent his models down the runway with chunky, messy plaits last season, we've spotted them everywhere.

The easy-to-wear style is a no brainer. As long as you've got the length to work with - or some extensions to hand - this look is easy to achieve, cool for summer, and seriously on trend. What's not to love?

Laidback style always looks great in the summer, but this season's take on the plait - half mermaid, half sixth former - is a real statement, and moves away from the ubiquitous Grecian look of the past few years.

Peaches' Manky Pony

Chelsea's Ladies Lunch - Key 103.

On Friday the 21st May, our stylist Helen Rawlinson was at the Hilton Manchester for a charity fundraising event for cash for kids, hosted by Key 103's top radio presenters Chelsea. Helen was invited to share her tips and show the 500 plus ladies that were attending the lunch how they can make the most of their hair by on stage demonstrations, whilst talking them through what she was doing and also giving advice on what styles are in this season and how you can achieve them yourself.

Helen also did the models hair before they started the fashion show giving them all varied looks from half up, half down, all up and all down. Helen also did the presenter, Chelsea, from Key 103's hair to make sure she looked her very best.

When the fashion show started Helen’s microphone was put on ready to go on stage, after the first part of the fashion show, she then did a ten minute slot of demonstrations, advice and tips for going from the beach to evening.

Then the models got underway with the second part of the show which Helen added hair pieces too. After this Helen went back on stage for the second part of her demonstration, advice and tips was given this time on special occasion hair, this was showing how you can get your hair in any style at any time.

After this it was the last part of the fashion show which was the wedding part, so Helen came off stage to make sure all models had hats, fascinators and clips in their hair.

After the fashion show Helen was on hand to give advice on all types of hair styling ranging from quick up do's to in-depth colour consultations.

KEY 103: Chelsea's Ladies Lunch, Friday 21st May

A charity event at the Hilton Hotel Manchester, Deansgate is being held by KEY 103 Radio Station to raise money for Cash For Kids.

The radio station has held a competition where local 'real' women any shape or size have entered to model on the catwalk for the fashion show.

At the event, ou...r fantastic stylist Helen will be demonstrating easy to do and up and coming styles for the summer seasons that people can do themselves at home. Helen will be talking people through step by step exactly what she's doing and how you can do these styles yourself.

Helen will also be styling all models hair for the fashion show including the models who won the 'real' women competition.

She will be promoting the services we offer at our salon in Waddington, which will also appear on the radio, so listen out for Helen of P&J Palmer Salon at Backridge Farm, Waddington on KEY 103.

Helen will be doing this along side of top celebrity make-up artists, fashion stylists from high fashion magazines and the team from KEY 103 radio station.

Champagne Reception and Art Exhibition

Creative Genius!

On Sunday 25th April, P&J Palmer Hair Salon was transformed into a Contemporary Art Gallery for their first Champagne Reception and Art Exhibition.

Guests enjoyed superb canapés and champagne, provided courtesy of Plate, whilst viewing a stunning collection of modern and eclectic art. Pieces ranged from large oil paintings to delicate prints and charcoal drawings, framed and ready to buy.

The Collection was supplied in the main by artists from the MA Fine Art course at the University of Central Lancashire and contributing artists Ellen Riley and Cedric, a French artist who has made the area his home. The Townsend Gallery in Skipton displayed an exquisite oil painting from established artist Steven Townsend at a price tag of £40,000.

The salon proved a spectacular venue on this bright, sunny day with families enjoying the wooden playgrounds, lamas, Shetland ponies, fine food at Plate and shopping.

Paul Palmer remarked “ We knew the chic ambience of the Salon would provide a great backdrop and Art sits well generally with our own creative style. We wanted to provide a relaxed and informal gathering as a thank you to our fabulous clients”

The exhibition continues for all to enjoy in the Salon for the next month and full details of all the artists are available (can be seen on facebook page).

Hair brushes are underrated by many women but they are very important to achieve the desired look. Good hair brushes are an investment as the right tools will make your hair look healthier and shinier. There are different types of brushes to style hair in different ways and selecting the wrong one could ruin your look or even damage your hair! So, have you chosen the right hair brush for your hair? Read on to find out the characteristics of the different type of brushes to help you choose the right one for you.

TYPES OF BRUSHES

Cushion Brush

The brush has a soft cushion base and bristles, often curved, on one side. It smooths and straightens medium to long hair that isn’t too thick. It also massages the scalp.

Paddle Brush

This brush has a flat base and small to medium bristles. It is great for straightening thick medium to long hair. it smooths and lengthens hair but doesn’t add volume. It also gives a scalp massage.

Styling Brush

It has close-set bristles that make it easier to control hair. It adheres to the hair nicely and is used to smooth, shape and polish it.

Thermal Brush

The central of a thermal brush is a heat conductive material, which gets hot when you use a hairdryer. This way, you increase the heat drying your hair, working both on the surface of the hair and internally. However, if the brush gets too hot, you could scorch your hair, so be careful.

Thermal round brushes

are available in different sizes: jumbo, large, medium and small. The size of the brush to use is determined by the lenght of your hair and the style you want. The small ones are used to roll hair to get curls while heating them with a blowdryer. The large ones, instead, smoothen hair and give a light massage.

Thermal flat

brushes work like a flat iron, straightening and smoothening hair without any bend.

Vent Brush

This brush has holes in the base to let air circulate through hair to blow dry it faster. It creates more volume and detangles hair.

SHAPE

Half-round: available in different sizes, they are used for every type of styling and blowdrying. It can be used on both wet and dry hair.

Oval: it styles the hair as well as penetrating it and massaging the scalp.

Round: used to add body and curl to straight hair. The smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl. Round brushes with densely packed bristles straightens and smoothens naturally wavy hair, while brushes with open bristles are good to achieve lift. However round brushes get tangled in hair easily.

BRISTLES

Metal bristles:

they are widely used but can damage your hair. Therefore, they should only be used on wigs.

Natural Boar bristles:

they are made with a boar’s hair and are recommended because they cause less friction on your hair and are therefore less damaging than synthetic bristles. They also distribute sebum, the hair’s natural conditioner that keeps it shiny and healthy, along the hair shaft. These bristles are especially good for people with thin hair.

Synthetic bristles:

synthetic materials like nylon massage the scalp, stimulate oil release, are easier to clean and last a long time. They are also usually less expensive than natural bristles. However, they don’t distribute the oil throughout the hair and therefore they don’t clean your hair very well. Some synthetic bristles can also be too stiff, which can damage your hair.

Hair is composed of 50.65% carbon, 20.85% oxygen, 17.14% nitrogen, 6.36% hydrogen, and 5.0% sulfur. Hair also contains trace amounts of magnesium, arsenic, iron, chromium and other metals and minerals.

Darker hair contains higher levels of carbon than blonde hair.

The fine, downy hair that covers the cheeks and other parts of the face is called lanugo hair.

Hair grows approximately one-half inch per month. Hair growth occurs fastest between the ages of 15 and 30, and grows faster on women than men.

The average life span of a strand of hair is between 4 and 7 years.

Hair's natural part is caused by the condition known as a hairstream. Hairstream refers to the effect that is created when the hair follicles slope in the same direction, thereby determining the directional flow of the hair. When two hairstreams slope in opposite directions, a natural part occurs. In other words, hair follicles on one side of the part slope differently than the follicles on the other side of the part.

Hair is shed on a daily basis. It is normal to shed between 75-150 hairs per day.

The numbers of hairs on the head vary with the hair's natural color. Redheads have about 90,000. Black, 108,000. Brown, 140,000. And blondes not only have more fun, they have more hair too. They have about 140,000.

There is an average of 1,000 hairs per square inch. I guess that means the bigger your head is, the more hair you have.

Normally, dry hair can be stretched one-fifth of it's length before breaking. Wet hair can stretch between 40-50% of it's length.

The curling iron was developed in 1875 by a Frenchman, Marcel Grateau. Not to be confused with Marcel Marceau, the famous mime.

The level system of haircolor, which is a 1-10 scale used to measure darkness (level 1 is black, level 10 is light blonde), was originally developed by law enforcement officials as a means to identify suspected criminals.

The removal of unwanted body hair can be dated back to the time of the ancient Egyptians, who used abrasion as a way to remove hair. Ancient Romans and Greeks used pumice stones and other abrasives to remove hair. Native Americans and Pacific Islanders removed hair by scraping with seashells. In ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures, the volcanic glass obsidian was used to shave hair. Obsidian can be honed many times sharper than most razor blades.

The earliest means of chemical hair removal dates back to the ancient Turks, who used a concoction known as "rusma". Rusma is a combination of yellow sulfide of arsenic, quicklime, and rose water.

Electrolysis was invented by Charles E. Michel, a St. Louis opthalmologist in 1875. Dr. Michel used galvanic current and a surgical needle in his device, which was developed to treat ingrown eyelashes.

"Stress and Hair Loss"

Stress has been closely associated with temporary hair loss for a few years now. As more and more individuals report hair loss as a symptom while going through periods of high stress (such as divorce, lost jobs, deaths in the family, and even childbirth) more doctors are looking into the medical connection of these two conditions.

How Stress Effects Hair Growth Patterns

Although some people may notice hair loss during extreme periods of stress, it is more likely that the hair loss will first be noticed after the stressful period has pasted. This is due to the effects of stress on the hair growth pattern. When an individual experiences intense stress chemicals in the body will transmit signals to the hair follicles, which causes them to enter a resting phase. During this phase there is no new hair growth. During the next few months hair will be shed normally but new growth will not occur to take its place. This uneven pattern can cause hair to appear thinner and eventually result in hair loss.
Once the stressful episode has ended the hair follicles will stay in this resting period for a period of time and new hair growth will not start for three to six months. This can lead to further stress in the individual as they notice more and more hair falling out and no new hair growing to take its place. If the stress from this condition is too intense the cycle can be prolonged and will result in further hair loss.

Will the Hair Loss Be Permanent?

Stress induced hair loss is usually temporary in nature. However, if the stress event is very prolonged or if the hair loss causes further stress then the condition could turn permanent. On average the hair loss will continue until the cause of the stress is eliminated for good. Once the cause is eliminated the hair growth pattern will return to normal within six months and new hair growth will be visible.

Curbing the Stress and Stopping the Hair Loss

The best way to deal with stress induced hair loss is to learn how to manage your stress levels before they affect your hair growth patterns. For regular day-to-day stressors, such as job worries, martial spats, and child rearing problems, a regime of thirty minutes of relaxation per day is a great antidote to hair loss. Find an activity that you really enjoy, such as reading, exercising, painting, chatting with friends, and indulge in the activity uninterrupted for at least thirty minutes each day. If you can't fit in a daily hobby break then at least use your shower or bathing time to sneak in a little relaxation. While showering let your mind wander to pleasant thoughts and spend five minutes clearing your head and relaxing your body.

For bigger stressors, like divorce, money problems, deaths in the family, or job loses, you may need to seek help in dealing with your stress. Support groups, counsellors, and therapists are great resources for dealing with overwhelming stress. You can also schedule an appointment with your doctor if you feel the stress is too great to handle on your own.

Once you have learned ways to control stress and made them a habit in your daily life you should be free from the effects of stress induced hair loss.

“Post Break Up Hair”

Not a day passes without someone coming into the salon demanding a drastic style and color change. Hairdressers call this phenomenon, “Post Break Up Hair.” Jack may not know it yet, but Jill is filing for divorce and washing that man right out of her hair!.....

The gender truth is that women like to cleanse, and why not? If ever there was a time to renovate body and soul, this is it, and serves the additional benefit of irritating Jack beyond all rationale.

This set me thinking of what rules should apply to such a change, and just as quickly I realized that any rules I would prescribe would defeat the very joy of throwing rules and caution to the wind. Drastic change is after all, drastic, and should not be encumbered by such things as reason or purpose.

In the end, hair is just hair, and grows back, unlike cutting off the nose to spite the face. Colour and length are important, but not nearly as important as the image, the message you want to send. My message would be, “Look at me! I am young, fresh, independent, confident, and free of you!” If I did it right, it would also say, “I look hot, and I am on my way out the door!

To send this message I think the hair needs to be off the shoulder or shorter with great movement and color that just explodes into the room. If you are going red, then go really red, not just a few red strands woven into your old yesterday hair, but a bold, vibrant red so alarming that burly firemen feel uneasy in your presence; or perhaps a deep mysterious black with cool blue hues that play in the moonlight; or a thick rich chocolate brown that begs to be served with strawberries and champagne; or maybe a striking blonde so dynamically brilliant that every woman in the room hates you, and grown men are reduced to tears because they haven’t met you.

Let your new life BEGIN!.

Cool Colour!

The most-wanted hair colours of the season are often inspired by the hottest celebs on the circuit. Sienna Miller, Posh and Jennifer Aniston have spawned mainstream copycat mania in less time than it takes to say 'tint brush and foils', while edgier stars such as Gwen Stefani, Sarah Harding and Keira Knightley inspire the urban-cool crowd. However the potential to get a colour change wrong is considerable. Ignore at your peril skin tone, eye colour, brow colour and your hair's texture and condition, as they will all have a bearing on how successful the outcome is. With deluxe-natural getting the nod this season, it's all about making a perfect marriage between features and follicles, improving on Mother Nature rather than going all GM, so to speak. 'Stripy, too vibrant or unnatural-looking colour does not translate into expensive hair!

If you're heading to the salon, a professional opinion from your stylist is worth listening to, as what works for your favourite superstar might do you no favours at all. And if you're doing it yourself at home, choosing a shade that's either two shades lighter or two shades darker than your natural colour is about as adventurous as you should get.

Skin tone – cool
Skin with pale pink undertones is classified as cool. Eyes are usually blue or grey. Blue-eyed blondes are the classic male fantasy and blue-eyed brunettes look unusual and striking, the right brown shade making eyes look more intensely blue. Grey eyes go with everything.

Golden rule: use predominantly ash tones to neutralise the pinkness in your skin if you regularly fall into the flush/blush/looks-a-bit-of-a-lush category, despite being pre-menopausal, unselfconscious and sober.

Skin tone - warm
Your complexion is often described as 'peaches and cream' and has yellow undertones, or you could have an olive skin, Mediterranean, Asian, dark or black skin. Eye colour tends to be brown, hazel or green.

Golden rule: creamy is usually dreamy, but brown eyes, dark brows and blonde hair need careful blending, and picking up on a toning brown and combining it with blonde will blur the join, as it were. The brunette buzz is for golden, rich browns and melting, milk-chocolate shades. Sallow complexions don't tend to be flattered by yellow gold or light copper tones, but intense dark chocolates, deep reds and burgundies will have an energising effect on skin that looks jaded.

Lock of Elvis's hair set to fetch £600 at auction

The hair is preserved behind a plastic bubble and mounted on a gold disc
A single strand of hair from the late Elvis Presley is expected to fetch £600 at an auction in Gloucestershire.

The hair is mounted in the centre of a gold disc, which is inscribed with "The King's Authentic Hair". The item includes a certificate of authenticity.

It is being sold by a Gloucestershire music fan who bought the strand "on a whim" through a television auction.

County auctioneer Chorley's said it is set to make between £400 and £600 in the sale at Prinknash Abbey Park.

Another strand of Elvis's hair, saved by his personal barber, sold for £1,055 at auction in November 2009 and a clump of the singer's hair went for $15,000 (£9,200) at an auction in Chicago in October last year.
