Fat Plaits

Ever since Alexander Wang sent his models down the runway with chunky, messy plaits last season, we've spotted them everywhere.

The easy-to-wear style is a no brainer. As long as you've got the length to work with - or some extensions to hand - this look is easy to achieve, cool for summer, and seriously on trend. What's not to love?

Laidback style always looks great in the summer, but this season's take on the plait - half mermaid, half sixth former - is a real statement, and moves away from the ubiquitous Grecian look of the past few years.

Latest in the [very] long list of celebrities to jump on board the train is Emma Watson, who opted for the look at Glastonbury Festival 2010. This practical style is perfect for festivals, and works better on second day hair with a bit of texture.

Also joining in the side-plait trend is Denise Richards, spotted wearing a neater take on the style. Worn tight, short and even, this is a more preppy version of the look. Contrasted against scrunchy, loose texture on top, Denise looks suitably sporty and All-American.

Ashley Greene wowed the crowds at the London premiere of Twilight Eclipse. As the only major female cast member in attendance, it was down to her to dazzle on the red carpet. This loosely woven fishtail braid is spot on for summer, although worn with a heavy gothic dress, the holiday vibe was somewhat lost...!

Supermodel Alessandro Ambrosio manages to combine Denise's neatness with the breezy, effortless feel of Emma's braid for a chic, loose finish. Perfect for those who want to get on board with the trend without looking too dishevelled, this pretty plait is a perfect summer party look.

The side braid is easy to do, It brings boho bang up to date, keeping scenesters on trend - even in the relaxed summer months!
